Appalshop: a hub for filmmaking in the heart of southern Appalachia

Appalshop is a non-profit organization based in Whitesburg, Kentucky.


It was founded in 1969 with the goal of documenting and preserving the rich cultural heritage of the Appalachian region, while also addressing issues relevant to the community.


Originally, Appalshop focused on producing documentaries, films and other media that shed a light on the Appalachian community.


Over time, Appalshop expanded to include various forms of media production, including music, theater, photography, radio and so much more.


Appalshop continues to play a significant role in preserving Appalachian culture, promoting social justice, and fostering artistic expression in the region.
